An Interview With Darcy

A few days ago I caught up with Dustin Aguilar, half of the new band Darcy. I've been keeping tabs on these guys for awhile so I thought what better way to introduce the band than with an interview. I asked them a few questions, let them speak for themselves, and let you decide if they really are SoundSuck material.

SoundSuck: What does Darcy sound like?
Dustin: We like to say Melodic-rock, Broadway-core, Dreamo, or something else equally weird and disarming. We pay close attention to melody, lyrics, interesting chord progressions, harmonies, etc. Some of our own songs don't even make it into the Darcy song roster. If we had to describe it in terms of other artists, we'd have to say we sound most like Paul McCartney and Rivers Cuomo writing a rock opera with guest composer Cole Porter. Does that make any sense?

SS: Tell us a little bit about Darcy and how the band got started.
Dustin: Darcy is the hard-fought brain child of Nathan Miller and Dustin Aguilar. After several years of figuring out exactly what types of songs to write, and after losing four other members, Gunnar and Chase Johnson made for an easy fix to the no drummer, no Keytar player problem, and Andrew Mckinney was that last little jigsaw piece that made the band the melody machine you see today.

SS: What style of music would you say Darcy creates?
Dustin: Melodic-rock, Broadway-core, and/or Dreamo. I prefer to call it dreamo, but the polls are not yet closed.

SS: What inspires you to make music?
Dustin: Sometimes we make music for catharsis (the purging of the emotions or relieving of emotional tensions, esp. through certain kinds of art, as tragedy or music.) Sometimes we make music for entertainment alone, but through it all, we make music because creating art is a great way to thank God for giving us the ability to create abstract ideas.

SS: Rumor has it that you guys are recording, is that true?
Dustin: That is as true as the day is long, and the days in that studio are truly long. It's a blast having a guy like Eric [Delegard] work on an album with us. The real wonder is that we sort of stumbled into this project. We did a live audition for Eric, and he liked what he heard, so he offered to put together a full-length album in hopes that it will sky rocket us all into super-mega stardom, or at least help pay some bills. We weren't really expecting that kind of response from him, but we're glad we got it.

SS: Why Darcy doesn't suck?
Dustin: The easiest way to describe why Darcy doesn't suck is to refer to our mission statement:Darcy is a band, but we're more than just a band. We're a band of brothers, and we're committed to things. We're committed to music, lyrics, poetry, life, love, and the Lord of Hosts—you may know him as God in such books as the Bible. Also, we are committed to you, the fans. But with Darcy, you are more than just fans, you are an important part of the band, and you wouldn't want to be part of a band that sucked, would you?

SS: Thanks Dustin, we look forward to seeing how the band's sound evolves with your upcoming release.

  3. Dreamo, huh? Rumor has it that if Dustin had his way, all the songs would be about aliens and cold hard science. Keep on dreamin' Nate! Also, keep on singing, because you need the practice.

    This is not Nathan Miller.

I wish Darcy would come play in Shanghai, or send some sort of emissaries who looked like them to come play music that sounded like theres in Shanghai.

    P.S. miss you guys,
also i think dreamo is just as retarded as emo, or screamo, or any derivation there of, that being said I think you should go for it only add the modifier day in front like as such "day-dreamo"
